A hairdresser has shared a video online illustrating how exactly you should be brushing your hair. Viewers were shocked by her advice as it appears many of us have been getting it wrong

How you're brushing your hair could be severely damaging it and stopping it from growing. According to hairdresser Rachel Valentine, there's only one way that you should be brushing your luscious locks. In a video she posted online, she illustrated how she detangles her tresses once they've been washed.

She said: "So if you apply some product first - this can be your heat protector or your leave-in conditioner. This is gonna really help you remove the knots and it won't be as painful. The brush you use is so important. I like Tangle Teezer, you can use a Wet Brush if you want but definitely don't use your average combs or paddle brushes. They are not for detangling. They are for styling only."

Rachel explained that when you're brushing you're hair while it's wet, you have to start from the bottom. It's also best to tease it, which helps get out any knots. She continued: "If you start at the top, the brush is gonna get stuck, even if it is a really good one, and it's gonna pull on your scalp and that's not gonna be good. I'm starting from the bottom and I'm gonna slowly just work my way up and you can see how easy that is, and my hair as you can see is super knotty.

"If your hair is super fragile, you might wanna wait until it's dried a little bit because when your hair is wet it's gonna stretch and it may cause breakage. My hair is quite strong, so I can go in and detangle it now while it's wet." Rachel's explainer video, which she uploaded to TikTok under the username @rachelvalentinehair, has clearly left many astounded, as at the time of writing it has amassed over 50,000 views.

People were grateful for the advice and commented on the clip saying they were eager to try it out. "Your videos are the best I could literally watch them over and over again," one person said. Another added: "You've made me go out and buy a Tangle Teezer this afternoon!!!"

Others shared their own hair tips. One person wrote: "I use a Tangle Teezer IN the shower, to distribute my conditioner through. Absolutely no detangling then needed afterwards." Another commented: "I also kinda hold my hair while I'm working from the bottom, so I don't pull it from the scalp."
